4 Day Choquequiro Trek

The Choquequirao Trek is a unique trip because you will be exploring a relative new archeological site which much bigger in comparison to Machu Picchu. Inca constructions, have their own construction signature and most of the times, the temples or buildings are being in harmony with the nature elements around it.  Choquequirao has been regarded lately as the 'sister of Machu Picchu' because there is similarities between both of them. 

The origins of name Choquequirao, come from the Quechua language as a "Clash Kiro" meaning "metal tooth" because the ‘peak’ in the shape of feline canine.  There are days in which the feline shaped peak displays luster as coinciding with mineral sites there.

The Choquequirao trek will lead you to a fascinating past, full of stories and culture. Discovered by a French explorer in the 18th century, took the attention of explorers during the 19th century like Hiram Bingham before his discovery of Machu Picchu.

The Choquequirao trek has recently been promoted by COPESCO (the official body responsible for tourism in Peru) and due that partially cleared the site, so there still remains a lot more to be discovered.

    DAY 1 :

    Cusco - Cachora - Santa Rosa

    During your briefing on the Choquequirao Trek, you will get the approx hour in which we will come to collect you at your hotel or meeting point. 

    Once we leave Cusco city,  the bus ride will long last 4 hours until we get to Cachora Village. Cachora village is very quiet and not very familiar with tourist passing over. Thus, we have to be very respectful on their privacy.  From this village will begin our Choquequirao trek, and descend into the Apurimac Valley where you will see snow-capped peaks in the distance and which spread out before us throughout the day.

    Hours later of trekking, will get our first views of Choquequirao Inca site on the far side of the valley.  The area around Choquequirao is rich in life and existing a wide variety of flora and fauna.

    Eventually, we will find some quite grounds on Choquequirao to gather and plan our day ahead of us.  Our campsite location will be at Santa Rosa (2200m / 7215ft.)  and it is on this side of the Apurimac River from which we will get a beautiful scenery around us..

    Lunch and dinner are included.

    Choquequirao Trek 4 Days, Choquequirao Hike 4 Days

    DAY 2 :

    Santa Rosa - Choquequirao

    Distant to get cover: 14 km / 8.7 miles. 5 to 6 hours walk.

    After having our breakfast, we leave our campsite in direction to the opposite side of the Apurimac Valley.  We will be ascending about 800m / 2, 624ft through hot and humid conditions. It will a challenging day as you will need to do some physical effort in your way up.   The amazing views we will reward our physical effort as we will see a variety of flora and fauna on this side of the valley. 

    As you are climbing up the mountains, we will have the necessary short breaks to get you keep moving,  and don’t stay behind the whole group.  During the Choquequirao trek, will be also pleased in satisfy your curiosity over this superb and unique Inca valleys by answering any questions you will have in mind. 

    During our Choquequirao trek you will notice a variety of bromeliads, orchids and stalks of bamboo. We’ll also hopefully see birds such as Quetzals, Toucans and a variety of hummingbirds.

    Later on, we will be settling our campsite close to Choquequirao at 3,050m / 10,005ft above sea level.   The views of the sun setting down as they shade the condors soaring in the valley below us, make this moment in time to remember.

    Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

    DAY 3 :

    Choquequirao - Chiquiska

    We get up very early in the morning and after been taking care on our daily breakfast will be ready to set off on our Choquequirao Trek and finally we have got to Choquequirao main site ruins. 

    Our guide, will explore the ruins with us and showing you to the most important part of this Inca ruins.  Our guide will provide some updates theories over the relationship between Choquequirao and Machu Picchu citadele.  We don’t know much about the Choquequirao origins in comparison to Machu Picchu.   Originally, discovered in the 17th century by the Spanish, it laid abandoned and forgotten until recent years. When tourism raised the profile of this archeological site, the exploration began and with a genuine interest to discover more, it has only a 25% been explored and many of Choquequirao secrets still wait to be discovered.

    Finishing exploring Choquequirao, we will head back to Cachora using the path we come from. 

    Our campsite for tonight's Chiquiska (1,800m / 5,905ft.) in the base of the valley by the Apurimac River.

    DAY 4 :

    Chiquiska - Cachora - Cusco

    Finished our breakfast, we will leave our campsite and continue our Choquequirao trek back to Cachora.  We will walking, on the side wing of the valley and having our last views of Choquequirao as we getting far away.

    By afternoon time will be arriving to Cachora and from there taking our bus to return to Cusco city.

     

    Attractions we will visit

    Cachora Village, It is a charming tiny village located in the department of Apurimac just off the road between Abancay and Cusco and starting point for our Choquequirao Trek.

     

    Apurimac Valley

    Located between the borders of Cuzco and Apurímac departments, that also are forming a deep canyon with a unique beauty valleys. This is a fantastic location for for canoeing, with incomparable rapids and waterfalls known by sport experts for its high levels of difficulty. The canyon is situated at of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet) above sea level, with impressive landscapes like the Salkantay mountain range with its clearly marked trails. It is a perfect area for our Choquequirao trekking.  There are medicinal hot springs and the Choquequirao archaeological complex that we will explore within Choquequirao trek.

     

    Choquequirao

    Located on the border of the districts of Cuzco and Apurímac.  The Choquequirao superb Inca architecture has terraces, plazas, chambers, imposing walls with niches, and other structures are worthy to see it during your Choquequirao Trek.

    Construction of Choquequirao is attributed to the Inca Pachacútec heirs, Tupac Yupanqui or Huayna Cápac, between the 15th and 16th centuries and is 10 times bigger than Machu Picchu. The site appears to have been intended for public and ceremonial purposes, with the cult of the sun god, the earth, and water, among others. It may also have been a controlled entry point to the realm of Vilcabamba.
