Cusco, Peru: A Gem of History & Heritage
Cusco, Peru is one of the top travel destinations in South America, which isn't surprising when you take into account the amount of scenic beauty, great food, fun and adventure visitors can have. Steeped in the rich culture of both the Incas and the Spaniards, the city boasts breathtaking historical landmarks alongside cultural offerings unlike any other place in the world.
What makes Cusco unique, aside from Machu Picchu of course, is its mystery. There’s a distinct feeling of visiting a place out of time. Its ancient pathways, woven through forgotten ruins, colonial houses and age-old churches, create an enigmatic serenity to those who walk them.
Adventurous visitors will delight in making a visit to Sacsayhuamán archaeological park to marvel at the ancient ruins of the citadel, constructed by the Killke people nearly 1,000 years ago. Perhaps you want to see the city on horseback: in Cusco, nearly anything is possible when it comes to whetting your appetite for adventure.
Visiting Majestic Machu Picchu
It goes without saying, one of the main reasons hundreds flock to the city of Cusco each year isn’t for the food or other offerings, although the food is certainly delicious. Machu Picchu is considered one of the world’s “new” seven wonders. Although often referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas,” the ruins are actually that of a citadel constructed in 1450 for Incan Emperor Pachacuti.
As one of the most breathtaking archaeological sites in the world, Machu Picchu has been known to provoke a range of reactions from visitors: everything from intense calm to extreme joy. Most visitors to Machu Picchu begin their trip by traveling along the Inca Trail. Since the government of Peru limits the number of visitors to the historic site per year, booking at least six months in advance is recommended.
Most visit Machu Picchu during the drier months from May-Aug. when there's a clear view of the temples along the way, as well as the ruins of Machu Picchu and the Urubamba Valley when you arrive. Visiting the citadel can be a very impactful moment for many, allowing them to connect with another ancient way of life they’ve never before encountered.
