Rafting Chili River

The Chili River runs between the Misti and Chachani volcanoes in Arequipa, a stunning colonial city in southern Peru. It passes right through urban Arequipa as it winds its way from the snow-capped Andes to the Pacific Ocean. The river’s name comes from the word “chili” in the indigenous Aymara language, which means “rattle” – the sound the river makes as it drags stones along its course during its zigzagging route through the mountains.
For this river rafting experience, you don’t have to go far from the city to enjoy a fun half-day on the Chili River. The river is perfect for beginners, with enough thrills to get your adrenaline pumping without requiring any previous experience or technical ability. It also offers breathtaking views of the neighboring volcanoes Misti and Chachani. There’s nothing quite like looking up from the rapids to see a volcano looming up in the distance.
Our rafting experience on the Chili River has been designed for travelers looking for a different Arequipa day trip while visiting the beautiful White City of Arequipa. The rapids of the Chili River are moderate, so it’s not a problem if you’ve never been river rafting before. It’s also a great half-day experience for the whole family.
The starting point for our river rafting adventure is only 30 minutes from Arequipa. Our rafting specialists will provide all the necessary clothing and equipment, and they’ll ensure that you’re safe and having fun. We’ll begin with a brief warm-up and all the necessary instructions for rafting on the river. Then we’ll set off down the rapids of the Chili River, through class II to III rapids. These aren’t difficult or treacherous but offer plenty of fun. And if anyone wants to skip a section of the more boisterous rapids, they can get out of the raft and walk for a short while before rejoining the group.
The rafting experience lasts for about one hour and thirty minutes. Eventually, we’ll arrive at the final point, where we will regroup with our support staff. Then we’ll head back to Arequipa and drop you off at your hotel, having successfully conquered the rattling Chili River!
