Palomino Islands

Standing in the hustle and bustle of Lima, you’d hardly imagine that just six or so miles off the coast of the capital is a natural wildlife hotspot. The Palomino Islands are a tiny archipelago of just four islets, which, despite their small size, these islands are home to a staggering array of marine life. With just a short boat ride, you can reach these wonderful islands, where you can see sea lions, guanayes, boobies, pelicans, red-legged cormorants and even Humboldt penguins. The main highlight of this spectacular excursion is swimming with sea lions. The Palomino Islands are home to a large colony of sea lions, where we can swim freely among them due to the absence of predators. This 1 Day Lima tour offers an unforgettable and emotion-filled experience in the Pacific Ocean!
Please Bring:
First things first: don’t forget your camera, and bring some extra batteries, as you’ll be taking a lot of photos during our trip to the Palomino Islands! Also, bring layers of clothing as it can get quite cold, and a hat and sunscreen in case the sun decides to emerge from the typically grey skies above Lima.
Our marine adventure begins when we meet at 10 a.m. at the Marina Club del Callao, near the Abtao submarine museum. After a quick briefing, will head off in the boat to the islands. On our way, we’ll pass by fishermen as they haul their catch from the Pacific Ocean, and we’ll have amazing views of the coastal cliffs of Lima.
At about 11:30 a.m. we’ll reach the Palomino Islands, where we can see the massive area of seabirds and, hopefully, penguins. We’ll take the boat close to a huge sea lion colony, and we’ll see these friendly creatures swimming, jumping, and diving close to our boat. Even better, we’ll be taking wetsuits and life vests with us, so if you want to swim with the sea lions, you can! Sometimes the curious young sea lions come up and touch swimmers, which is an amazing experience. The older – and perhaps wiser – sea lions tend to stay at a distance of about five meters away.
We’ll spend about an hour at this part of the islands, before we begin our return journey. On the way, we’ll pass by more amazing colonies with huge bird colonies. Once we reach the calmer waters, we’ll have a snack on the boat and talk about all the wonderful sea life that we’ve seen. We will arrive back at the port in Callao at around 1 p.m., exhilarated by our magical marine adventure just a stone's throw from Lima!
At the end of the Palomino Islands tour, we will return to your hotel.
