Cumbemayo Archaeological




The Archaeological Complex of Cumbemayo sits at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level and is about 20 km by road to the southwest of Cajamarca. This fascinating site includes a number of intriguing elements, including an ancient aqueduct, petroglyphs, and massive volcanic pillars.
We will leave Cajamarca and drive along a winding road through spectacular scenery to the Archaeological Complex of Cumbemayo. As we approach the site, you’ll soon see the towering volcanic pillars, which, over the centuries, have been blown by wind and rain into strange anthropomorphic shapes. The most famous of these is Los Frailones (“The Friars”), named by local people due to their resemblance to a procession of monks.
Cumbemayo is renowned for its hydraulic engineering, particularly its intricate canal system that diverts water from the Pacific to the Atlantic. This feat of ancient engineering is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of the region's early inhabitants. The canal, carved from rock by the flow of water, is adorned with mysterious petroglyphs that add to the site's enigmatic allure.
