Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción is a pristine yet accessible jungle lodge with 25 luxury private cabins. Built in a former cacao and rubber plantation, this magnificent lodge is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, right on the doorstep of the Tambopata National Reserve. From this luxurious base in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, you can explore the surrounding jungle and venture into the reserve, which is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.
Your Amazon adventure begins when we pick you up from the airport in Puerto Maldonado. We’ll then board our boat for the 25-minute river journey to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, keeping our eyes open for wildlife as we go. When we arrive, you’ll be shown to your cabin and introduced to all the wonderful facilities at the lodge. Afterwards, we’ll all gather for a wonderful lunch in the dining room, prepared with organic local ingredients and native flavors.
After lunch, your experienced jungle guide will take you on a walk along our Concepción Trails, which are found within the grounds of our private 819 hectares of pristine forest. During the walk, your guide will tell you all about the flora and fauna you see, and you will learn about primary and secondary rainforests, their components uses, and the impact of humans on the rainforest.
Later, at dusk, we’ll head out on our small motorized boat on the Twilight River excursion. We’ll navigate along the Madre de Dios River, and your guide will tell you all about the local ecosystem, the Amazonian creeks, and the behavior of the nocturnal birds that we will see and hear.
When we return to the lodge, we’ll have a wonderful dinner in the dining room.

After breakfast, we will explore the amazing Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and the Anaconda Walk. The Canopy Walkway takes us up a 29-meter-tall tower into the treetop realm. Stretching for more than a quarter of a mile, the walkway takes you through the canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. From this awe-inspiring vantage point, we’ll look out for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and the three-toed sloth.
After lunch, we will head to River Island This is a 20-minute boat ride to an uninhabited river island close to Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra where you can see the striking contrast of vegetation within the transition rainforest. We will pull up to the large sandbank island and walk through jungle trails on this floodplain which provides the island with an ecosystem rich in birdlife, including the Amazonian umbrella bird, one of the most sought-after species by birdwatchers.
*Optional: Sandoval Lake
The famous Lake Sandoval is found in the Tambopata National Reserve. We can take canoes out onto the beautiful Oxbow Lake, which is home to endangered giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, black caimans, and other incredible animal species.

After an early breakfast, we’ll visit our own organic bio-orchard to discover many of the Amazon rainforest’s tropical plants, where we’ll learn about their properties and medicinal uses by indigenous communities. Then we’ll visit our 30-hectare "Palmetum", a collection of 19 Amazonian palms in a plot reserved for rainforest restoration and conservation. Your guide will tell you all about these fascinating palms, including the yarina (vegetable ivory) and the walking palm, which cleverly moves its roots in search of sunlight.
We’ll then head back to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción for lunch and a rest before we head out on the Cocha water excursion. We’ll head out in dugout canoes on the beautiful lake near the lodge, where we can go catch-and-release fishing. The scenery here is wonderful, and we can see many birds including hoatzins (skunk birds), flycatchers, and gray-necked wood rails.
We can then visit the wreck of the Fitzgerald steamboat, and your guide will tell you all about its history and its connection with Werner Herzog’s award-winning movie, Fitzcarraldo. In the evening, we can observe more wildlife from our specially-built wildlife-watching hides.
After dinner, we will have the opportunity to take the Inland Collpa excursion where you will have the chance to look out for different species of animals while engaged in their clay-lick behavior in search of salt.

Sadly, today is the final day of this Amazon adventure. After a breakfast buffet, we’ll take the boat back to Puerto Maldonado. If you have time before your flight, we can visit the butterfly house where you can see a stunning array of colorful butterflies, some small and some as large as your hand. You can learn all about the life stages of these beautiful insects, and walk among them as they flutter around. Then we’ll take you to the airport or to your hotel in Puerto Maldonado. We hope you enjoyed your wonderful experience at the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest!
