On this half day tour, we will take you out to La Colpa, which is about 11 km from the city of Cajamarca. This wonderful traditional hacienda is located in beautiful surroundings. The farm is home to a charming chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen. There’s also a workshop and a man-made lagoon decorated with small bridges and surrounded by gardens. You’ll sometimes see ducks and swans paddling around in these tranquil waters.
La Colpa is perhaps most famous for its cows, who are called for individually, by name, when it’s time for milking. Each cow responds when called, and takes up its position in the stable. According to local legend, the practice began when the farmer, as a joke, starting calling one of the cows by the name of his wife. After a while, the cow began to come when called by this name, and soon all the cows had names. It is fun to watch the cows as they each come when called, perhaps more so for the visiting tourists than the farmer’s poor wife.
This dairy farm plays an important role in the local economy, as it produces a huge amount of milk, cheese, and other dairy products. You’ll have the opportunity to purchase some of these items at the end of the tour, which lasts for about three hours.
