Tambo Colorado

Tambo Colorado is a fascinating Inca archaeological site in the Pisco River Valley of the Ica Region of southern Peru. Due to the very dry climate here, Tambo Colorado is one of the best-preserved Inca sites on the Peruvian coast. Its adobe walls have withstood the ravages of time surprisingly well. The name of the site comes from the bright colors that once adorned its outer walls, with horizontal stripes of red, black, white, and yellow ochre atop the stucco. Amazingly, some of these colors can still be seen today.
The site was once a strategically important administrative and control site. Its location on the Royal Road between the coast and the highlands. This made it hugely important for the Inca Empire, including during times of war, when they could rest and resupply their marching soldiers at Tambo Colorado.
We’ll pick you up from your hotel and drive you out to Tambo Colorado, which sits about 30 miles to the east of Pisco. When we arrive, your knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour of these fascinating ruins, which were built during the reign of Tupac Yupanqui (Pachacutec) in the last quarter of the 15th century.
You’ll have plenty of time to explore this large site, walking through the various corridors and seeing the typical Incan design of the structure with its recessed trapezoidal niches. The site consists of several structures around a large central plaza, with a classic raised ceremonial platform, known as Ushnu. The main building is known as La Fortaleza (the Fort). Your guide will tell you all about the site as you walk around, explaining the importance of Tambo Colorado for the Incas, both as an administrative and ceremonial center.
After exploring the ruins, we’ll visit the on-site museum, where you can see photos of the excavation as well as the archaeological remains that were found at Tambo Colorado and its surrounding area. We’ll then take a short walk to the slopes of the above Tambo Colorado, where we can see an old cemetery used by the Incas.
After this, we’ll end our tour and drive you back to your hotel in Ica.
