Your Peruvian adventure begins the moment you land in Lima. A warm welcome meets you, and transfers you to your hotel. The capital’s perfect mix of a calm Pacific breeze and a profound and fascinating history begins your 14 day adventure to breathe in the colours of Peru. Make sure you sample the award-winning culinary scene in the capital during your stay.
Lima reveals itself to you through its colonial buildings with fabulous wooden balconies that surround the Plaza Mayor. The historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site that reflects centuries of encounters and battles. The San Francisco Convent and the extraordinary Larco Museum connect ancient spiritual practices to everyday life in ways that are surprising. They will offer you the essence of this coastal region that is perfectly represented in the capital of the country.
Today begins in Lima, but there is a drastic change of pace waiting for you. A plane carries you from the coastal capital into the ecological paradise of the Amazon rainforest. We will arrive in Puerto Maldonado, where you will meet the river and follow its ancient channel toward the Posada Amazonas lodge. This eco-lodge is actually found within a native rainforest community. Your first afternoon in the jungle will allow you to view from a canopy tower above the treetops. Toucans and macaws fly across the green ocean of tres, offering colors more vivid than any natural palette you’ve ever seen before. A night presentation by local guides introduces you to some deeper local knowledge about the Amazon, forming the first impressions mentioned in many Colours of Peru Reviews.
Today, you will awaken to the humid breath of the rainforest. Today’s riverboat trip to an oxbow lake will connect you with wildlife like never before. Watch giant otters play, caimans sunning themselves, unusual birds fluttering in the trees, and frogs singing in the shadows. The rainforest is Mother Nature’s classroom, where every sound and scent tells you something you never knew. Your guides, Colours of Peru descriptions, will share a deeper meaning about the different plants, insects, animal prints, and pathways. It is time to slow right down and listen and feel the jungle and its inhabitants.
After a final rainforest sunrise, you will return by boat to Puerto Maldonado and fly towards the Andes mountains to Cusco. We will transfer you straight to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, which is found at a lower elevation than Cusco. Along the way, we will stop off at Chinchero village, where weaving and farming are so intertwined that colors and crops carry ancient philosophies. The women in the community carry forward ancestral weaving knowledge and handmade traditions that literally tell a story. You will witness firsthand how a single symbol or pattern can contain generations of cosmology using natural plant-based dyes. After this day of immersion in the Sacred Valley, you will settle into the Andean way of life and will stay in your Sacred Valley hotel for the evening
This is another day all about livingPeruvian culture in the Andes. Walking with villagers in Huilloc and helping them with their daily tasks. Laughter fills the air, as does learning about how condors and other sacred birds are woven into life and into the colorful textiles. In the town of Ollantaytambo, the stones themselves are your guides. They are carved by ancient hands and are still aligned with traditional ceremonies. Magnificent ruins and Andean traditions have never been more alive! From here, you head to the train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. You will take the train along the banks of the river that takes you toward Machu Picchu and the town that sits below it – Aguas Calientes.
Depending on your entrance time, you will ascend to Machu Picchu along a winding road. At the entrance gate, we catch our first glimpse of vast terraces, plazas, temples, and even the odd llama! On a spiritual level, you will feel the same logic of human and cosmic alignment that guided the Incas, all those years ago. After the guided tour, you will go back to Aguas Calientes for lunch and a final wander around the town. We will take the train back, and we will transfer you to your hotel back in Cusco. This is a city whose stones echo the same philosophical whispers as the Machu Picchu stones.
In Cusco, the walls of the sacred Koricancha offer insight into an Inca world of respecting the cosmos. The cathedral’s blended symbolism demonstrates how the Andean people´s faith evolves through the centuries. Sacsayhuamán and Tambomachay display the Incas’ mastery over stone and water. The land teaches visitors technique and theology at the same time. Cuco really is a conglomeration of Inca marvels, and we will visit the main sites on this day of the Colour of Peru itinerary!
Today is the day we take a legendary train ride through an Andean world from the mountains of Cusco to the altiplano of Puno and Lake Titicaca. The meditation of the train tracks and grazing plains allows you to reflect as you experience altitude, an endless horizon, and culture in its truest form. Arriving in Puno, you enter a highland city that is the folklore capital of Peru, shaped by wind, lake, history, and tradition.
Lake Titicaca’s water is sacred and the birthplace of fables and ancient folklore. You will walk on totora reeds that feels like sponge and living history, on the floating reed islands of Uros. On Taquile Island, although it doesn’t float, its weaving is a fabric of language and ancestral identity. Many travellers describe this day as one of the most impressive Colours of Peru Trip Highlights.
Today, we leave the altiplano and the highest navigable lake in the world, as we begin the ascent toward the land of deep canyons. We will cross highland plains where llamas and Andean wildlife co-exist with migrating flamingos and spectacular mountain peaks. In the afternoon, we will reach Chivay in the Colca Valley. This is where a different kind of Andean life comes into its own as we begin to dive into Colca’s expansive world of tradition. There are even some wonderful hot springs to relax and enjoy the canyon´s stereotypical scenery that lives and breathes a million Peruvian tales.
The early morning winds carry condors across your eye´s view as you stand at the Cruz del Condor. This is where altitude, wind, Andean ecology, and belief systems merge into one single sight. Terraced walls etched into hillsides talk of sustainable wisdom unique to the Arequipa region. You will head to Arequipa, which is a land of volcanoes and seismic activity. This just adds to the dramatic backdrop and whitewashed buildings built from volcanic ash, characteristic of the center.
Arequipa’s volcanic shines bright under the sun, that seems to shine year-round! In the San Camilo market, you can taste real, everyday Arequipa with exquisite cuisine from this region. Learn how to prepare regional dishes with local hosts, and share a meal that goes way beyond a cooking experience. In the evening, as we head to the airport, you will be returning to Lima, with content stomachs and the warmth of this Arequipa community kitchen with you. Tonight you will spend the evening once more in the capital of Peru, having witnessed the country’s colours in the most vibrant of ways.
Your last morning is unstructured and depends on your international flight time. This is a chance to breathe, to wander, and to feel Peru one last time before you say goodbye on this colours of Peru itinerary. We will transfer you to the Lima International Airport for your onward flight. This marks the end of your 14 days in Peru, at least for now….!
