Certain Peru tours are about visiting iconic Inca sites. Others are about ticking off destinations on a checklist. This Sacred Land of the Incas tour is about so much more than that, though. If you are traveling to South America and visiting Peru, you want to have the best experience possible, and in a meaningful and fulfilling way. This expertly designed itinerary is all about cultural depth, ancient Andean philosophies, traditional customs, folklore and belief systems, epic scenery, and most importantly, a feeling of belonging. The Sacred Land of the Incas is a deliberate exploration of Peru as Peruvians understand it. Visiting a land as a living being, where time is circular, and travel is a shared cultural exchange. You will visit desert coastlines and ancient burial grounds. Andean communities where weaving is still a way of communication, and a special route that is immersed in the Andean idea of reciprocity between people, nature, energy, and spirit. The Sacred land of the Incas tour isn’t just in the mountains of Cusco, it is an ancient philosophy that envelops the different regions of Peru in a profound way that is still in existence today. This is a unique introduction to Peru from a completely authentic perspective.
You will arrive to Peru via its capital, Lima. This is a coastal city where the Pacific Ocean’s breezes touch every street and every plaza. You are likely to see the Pacific soon, but you feel the energy of the capital that beats to its own drum first. It fuses the tides of history, waves of culture, and is the kind of energy that softly suggests the hint of ancient ancestral connections. As you head to your hotel, you will soon realize that you are in a different reality that guide Sacred Land of the Incas Tour itineraries for many a traveler. In the afternoon, you can walk the cliffs of Miraflores, watch the sun melt into the sea, and see how the land shapes the people who live beside the Pacific. Or even dine in one of the fabulous restaurants that form this culinary capital of the Americas.
Today is all about a story told by winds and tides. After breakfast, we walk through the historical plazas and bustling heart of Lima. You will sense how ancient traditions are adapted to new forms of existence. We will visit the Larco Museum, where pre-Columbian art is in the form of clay and textiles that speak about the human cycles of life, the seasons, and belief systems. In the afternoon, we will leave the capital behind for now, as we drive south toward the Paracas Peninsula. This is where the desert kisses the ocean in the most incredible of ways. By the evening, you will arrive in Paracas, where the horizon stretches wide. This is a space that invites you to reflect, and it prepares you perfectly for the events ahead on this affordable Sacred land of the Incas tour.
After a night of listening to the ocean waves, we will head to the port and step aboard a boat as we take to the water. In the Pacific Ocean, the wildlife feels like living poetry with cormorants wheeling overhead. On tin islands, the sea lions lounge on sun-kissed rocks, and the ocean roars around them with presence. It’s a seascape that feels older than memory and larger than myth.
In the afternoon, we will continue to the town of Ica. This is where traditional vineyards and Pisco distilleries remind you that food and celebration are as old as generational Peruvian gatherings. You can taste pisco, the national tipple, where centuries of hands have perfected this spirit and grapes as an active living coastal tradition. Our night in Ica prepares us for the mysterious Nazca lines on the next day of this Sacred Land of the Incas Tour.
Today, we traverse the great plains of Nazca. You may choose to take an optional flight over the mysterious geoglyphs (for an additional cost) to give you a bird’s eye perspective of the massive figures etched into the earth. This is conceived as an attitude that balances human intention with celestial constellations. Or was it a way of communicating with interplanetary beings all those centuries ago? You can decide! After the flight over the lines, we will visit the Chauchilla Cemetery, where ancient remains and desert sands settle in a kind of delicate peace. The remote desert lands house many secrets awaiting Discovery. We will then continue on our way south, to Arequipa, the “White City” for the night. This is Peru´s second-largest city, made from volcanic stone from the nearby Misti volcano on the horizon.
Today is an invitation to immerse in the unique Peruvian city made of ash. Arequipa’s streets are white and almost Mediterranean, although we are a long way from that sea! These volcanic stones are shaped by history and have withstood many a tremor in this seismic section of Peru. We will explore the Santa Catalina Convent, where the Terracota buildings and small courtyards become places of quiet reflection within the city. Arequipa is also famous for its gastronomy. Now is the time to sample so delectable Arequipan dishes as ancient as the surrounding volcanoes. Together with a local family and your guide, you will buy ingredients in the local market and create classic dishes like “Rocoto Relleno” or “Chupe de Camarones”. Dining in Arequipa is a profound cultural exchange for you to enjoy and immerse yourself in.
Today is a travel day, heading higher in elevation to he stunning Colca Canyon, but like all meaningful travel, it’s also a mental and physical transition. As the road curves through volcanic landscapes and grazing vicuñas, every turn feels like a lesson in marveling at Mother Nature. We soon arrive at the Colca Canyon, the domain of mountains and volcanoes, considered the homes of the “apus”. Mountain Gods are still honored even after centuries of worship, which should tell you something profound about this region. On arrival in Chivay, you may choose to relax in the hot springs, to feel the earth’s warmth bubbling beneath an open sky. This is a day of grounding yourself, your body, your mind, and your soul.
Today, we rise early to watch condors glide on the thermals over Colca Canyon’s greatness. These are the largest flying birds in all of the Americas, soaring on the winds that traverse time here in the Colca Canyon. This is a moment that feels alive and enormous, a reminder of freedom and connection on the planet. Plus, a timely reminder of how small we are! After this incredibly humbling experience, the road then takes us South to Puno. This is the cultural heartland of Peruvian folklore and lakeside life. A land where earthly and celestial waters meet, and where legend has it that the very first Incas came from. Tonight, you will spend the night in Puno and sample life in the altiplano, close to the Bolivian border, and in the Sacred lands of the Incas
Lake Titicaca is a brand-new world of its own. You will visit the floating islands of the Uros people, whose lives are woven into the totora reeds on which they live. This is a living expression of adapting to your environment, living as a united community, and maintaining harmony with this sometimes harsh environment.
After the spongy reed islands, we head to Taquile, where weaving is not only art, it’s an ancient language even older than Quechua. Each intricate pattern holds stories of ancestors, their environment, and even time itself. This island is famous for its weaving and ancient traditions, but what is not often mentioned is the stunning scenery with a backdrop of Lake Titicaca.
The Andean highlands unfold like a painting as we take the road to Cusco. We will stop off at Pukara, famous for the ceramic toritos that bring good fortune, then at La Raya, where earth and sky meet at the highest point of the route, and where the Puno region meets the Cusco region. We will then visit Raqchi, which is a temple dedicated to Wiracocha, the creator of the universe, and then Andahuaylillas, the home of the “Sistine Chapel of the Andes,”. This is where indigenous art and Catholicism blend in stunning, intricate murals on the walls of the church. This is a day that feels like walking in metaphors, with each stop a different ancient folklorical story about ancient Peru. Arriving in Cusco takes us to the imperial city for a welcoming hotel and restful night’s sleep.
Today we leave Cusco, at least for now, for a day of cultural immersion in a traditional weaving community of the Sacred Valley. In Huilloc, we step into everyday Andean life, where tending the fields, watching traditional textiles come alive, joining in ancestral tasks, and sharing food with local families is part of everyday life…. And what a privilege. This is the true heart from the Cusco Sacred Land of the Incas tour and is not only observing live tradition with your own eyes, but actually living it. Here, meaningful meetings are woven into daily chores, tasks, and celebrations. We will also visit Ollantaytambo, a living Inca town where the stones, water systems, and terraces reflect the wisdom of earth and sky in ancient celestial engineering techniques. After our tour of the archaeological site, we head to the station where the train takes us to Aguas Calientes. This is the gateway to Machu Picchu through mountains overflowing with sound and fable. Our night was spent here in preparation to visit the incredible Inca city of Machu Picchu, the next morning.
As you ascend to the Machu Picchu entrance, on this Sacred Land of The Incas tour, it is as though you are reaching a natural culmination of what this 13 day trip has been all about. Your knowledgeable local guide will walk you through the archaeological site that aligns with celestial planets and seasonal cycles. Here, stone and mountains communicate with each other as they embrace human presence as part of a natural design. After this sacred, energetic moment, you will return by train to Cusco and then be transferred to your hotel, to process what has just actually happened toda
This morning we leave Cusco. You will head to the airport to take the flight to Lima, to soar over the Andes just like the condor at Colca.
