A few practical notes up front
As your plane lands in Cusco, the Andes welcome you to the mountain region of Peru from the get go. These aren’t just any old mountains though, as you will soon come to discover! A private transfer takes you to your hotel where your guide will meet and greet you for an information-packed briefing. You can spend the day acclimatizing with a stroll around the Plaza de Armas, the San Blas neighborhood, the artisan markets, or simply sit down with a cup of coca tea and watch the world go by. This first day is all about preparing your body for the challenging trek ahead and to let your body adjust to the high elevation. Today is also deliberately designed to ease you into the high elevation, so we can make sure acclimatization is going smoothly and according to plan! We will head out of the city to Sacsayhuamán, Q’enqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay with your local guide, who will tell you all about the Quechua cosmology, the Andean world view and the unique Inca ways of connecting with the earth and nature. This day is perfect to raise the level a little for the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 7 days that is about to begin.
The first of a few early mornings will take us to the trailhead at Piscacucho (KM 82). The permits are checked, the porters are weighed and we are ready to begin this hike of hikes in the Andes, as the trail lies before us! The intricate Inca pathway rises and falls, winding through the cloud forests as we begin to climb in altitude. We will pass Patallacta and Huillca Raccay, which will give us our first glimpses of the high mountain peaks such as Mount Veronica. Tonight we sleep in comfortable tents at the campsite at Wayllabamba. This is your first true night on the iconic Inca Trail and a first clear insight in the natural rhythm of the Andes. It will still be dark when we are woken up with a cup of coca tea by the porters who are from these ancient Inca lands. These wonderful people will look after us all along the trail, with excellent service and biggest of smiles. At breakfast, fill your stomach to the brim to climb up to the trail’s highest point, the Abra de Warmiwañusca, better known as Dead Woman’s Pass. It´s a steep section of the trail, as we reach the summit at 4200m. This is a test for your lungs as well as your will. Once at the top, take a moment to celebrate, with exceptional views and the realization that you are half the way to Machu Picchu. The descent into the valleys on the other side of the pass is a welcome one, where the air sweetens and the flora changes dramatically. Today, is a day for history and archaeology aficionados as we visit impressive Inca archaeological sites like Runkurakay and Phuyupatamarca – which means the “Town in the Clouds” All along the trail, we can observe amazing terraces, Inca stairways, and intricate water systems that still channel water today. As we descend, the scenery turns green and we will arrive at the Intipata campsite, close to the extraordinary tiered terraces of Wiñay Wayna. As night falls, the starry skies are pristine, over the ruins, they appear like tiny lights from another age.

It is this final morning of the trek that is the reason many people choose to hike the Inca Trail: As we reach Intipunku (“Sun Gate”) Machu Picchu unfolds below you with the sun yet to come over the mountains. As we descend into the archaeological site, our guided exploration follows. A magical city full of temples, agricultural terraces, small buildings and the Intihuatana. Then there are the surrounding views! The tangible energy of this site has to be seen to be believed! This is Peru´s patrimony best described and all in the same site. As we descend back down to Aguas Calientes for lunch, there will be a momento of quiet awe as we contemplate what we have just hiked and what we have just seen. The train ride back to Cusco is relaxing after this 4 days of hiking. You will arrive in Cusco with a quiet glow that you have witnessed history and authentic Peruvian culture with your own eyes, and you will feel that you have been gifted with the ancestral knowledge of a bygone civilization.
