Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción is a pristine yet accessible jungle lodge with 25 luxury private cabins. Built in a former cacao and rubber plantation, this magnificent lodge is located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River, right on the doorstep of the Tambopata National Reserve. From the luxurious Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción base in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, you can explore the surrounding jungle and venture into the reserve, which is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.
Your Amazon adventure begins when we pick you up from your hotel or the airport in Puerto Maldonado. From here, we take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to reach the wonderful Inkaterra Field Station. After a short briefing, you can settle into your cabaña and then have lunch in the dining room.
In the afternoon, you can meet your highly experienced jungle guide and choose from the various excursions available at the lodge. You can head off on a guided walk along the rainforest trail system to explore the Amazon Basin, passing by incredible trees such as the Shihuahuaco and the strangler fig, and seeing huge numbers of colorful birds and exotic insects.
Later, you can go on the river night watch excursion, a guided boat ride on the Madre de Dios River. During the excursion, you can see the incredible change in the jungle as the sun sets and the nocturnal world comes alive. After dark, we can look for nightjars, owls, capybaras and big caimans. Returning to the lodge, you can then enjoy a delicious dinner in the main dining room. Afterwards, you can relax in your cabin or head out into the grounds to experience more of the rainforest and the cacophony of magnificent sounds of the Amazon Rainforest at night.

After breakfast, we will explore the amazing Inkaterra Canopy Walkway and the Anaconda Walk. The Canopy Walkway takes us up a 29-meter-tall tower into the treetop realm. Stretching for more than a quarter of a mile, the walkway takes you through the canopy on a suspension bridge network linking eight observation platforms. From this awe-inspiring vantage point, we’ll look out for toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and the three-toed sloth.
After lunch, we will head to River Island This is a 20-minute boat ride to an uninhabited river island close to Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra where you can see the striking contrast of vegetation within the transition rainforest. We will pull up to the large sandbank island and walk through jungle trails on this floodplain which provides the island with an ecosystem rich in birdlife, including the Amazonian umbrella bird, one of the most sought-after species by birdwatchers.
*Optional: Sandoval Lake
The famous Lake Sandoval is found in the Tambopata National Reserve. We can take canoes out onto the beautiful Oxbow Lake, which is home to endangered giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, black caimans, and other incredible animal species.

After an early breakfast, we’ll get ready for the Castaña excursion. Your guide will take you on a rainforest walk through the grounds of the lodge, where you can see a Brazil nut plantation. The Brazil nut tree plays an important role in the local economy of Madre de Dios. Your guide will show you how the Brazil nut is collected using traditional tools and techniques, and you can try to open one yourself using a machete and a nutcracker – and then, of course, you can eat the nuts!
We’ll head back to the lodge for lunch. Then, in the afternoon, we will visit the cacao plantation at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción and take part in the chocolate-making process. You will learn how to select the fresh cacao fruits, discover how the seeds are fermented and sundried, and then you can peel the toasted cacao seeds and grind them into an aromatic paste. We’ll end this excursion by tasting a selection of treats made from our organic chocolate.
Before dinner, visit one of the lodge’s inland "collpas", meaning ‘salty area’ in Quechua. Though wildlife watching is tricky in practice, learn how these clay walls attract fascinating mammal behavior hidden right beside the lodge. We will end the day with a delicious dinner at the lodge.
Sadly, today is the final day of this Amazon adventure. After a breakfast buffet, we’ll take the boat back to Puerto Maldonado. If you have time before your flight, we can visit the butterfly house where you can see a stunning array of colorful butterflies, some small and some as large as your hand. You can learn all about the life stages of these beautiful insects, and walk among them as they flutter around. Then we’ll take you to the airport or to your hotel in Puerto Maldonado. We hope you enjoyed your wonderful experience at the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest!
