There are treks in and around Cusco that follow famous trails, and then there are treks that feel like you are guided by the mountains themselves. The Moonstone Trek to Machu Picchu is one of the second kind of treks. This quiet, off-the-beaten-path trek to Machu Picchu starts in the shadow of Quillarumiyoc, a Moon Temple and water divination site, allegedly for just the women in Inca society. This archaeological site is where they honored the rhythms of night, fertility, femininity, and intuition, which were highly important in ancient Peruvian culture. Here, carved into stones, is the crescent moon that gives the trail its name. You will see and feel why the Quechua world was guided not just by the Sun, but by balance in general. Killa and Inti, the darkness and light, and water and stone. A duality that is ever -present in ancient Andean philosophy.
Over five days of trekking through the remote Andes, this route unfolds like a private conversation with the Andes. You will wander through Andean communities where life is still directly linked to the agricultural calendar. you will climb high passes watched over only by alpacas, you can explore forgotten quarries and wonderfully preserved Inca canal, and finally you reach the remote Inti Punku of the Sacred Valley (Sun Gate), a viewpoint with vistas over all of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
The 5-day private Moonstone Trek to Machu Picchu is far removed from checkpoints and crowds of people. It is a trek of stories and folklore, floating in the wind, passing through the mountains, and assisted quietly from our guide to the trekker. This trek is perfect if you want archaeology without rush, vast landscapes without noise, and a route that feels genuinely connected to Andean philosophy, then the 5-day private Moonstone Trek to Machu Picchu may be the perfect path to the ancient Inca city.
We begin departing from Cusco, driving toward the peaceful valley where the trailhead of the Quillarumiyoc Moonstone trek Peru awaits. Your guide leads you to the Moon Temple, explaining how the Incas read time through the shadows, moon cycles, and the sacred feminine energy, a gentle, intimate introduction to Andean cosmology. From here, we hike past potato terraces still plowed by oxen and traditional farming implements, and communities where Quechua is spoken more often than Spanish. Children often wave from their doorways and the elders greet us with that quiet mountain warmth that makes this route so special and authentic. We will climb gradually to our first camp, surrounded by open grasslands and the buzz of highland insects. This is a simple, beautiful beginning with a focus on nature and Andean tradition, on your Moonstone trek with camping experience.
Hiking: 3-4 hrs (Gradual ascent)
Today the terrain shifts as we enter an ancient quarry, where enormous chisel marks are still visible on half-shaped stones abandoned centuries ago. Your guide will explain how the Incas moved these huge blocks to build important sites, including Machu Picchu. It’s one of the most impressive features of the hidden Inca ruins on the Moonstone trail. We continue to one of the longest intact Inca canals ever found. Water still runs along sections of it to a quiet masterpiece of Inca engineering that tourists on busier hiking trails never see.
We will camp at a rustic campsite beside herds of alpacas and fall asleep under clean Andean skies, after a wonderful meal prepared by our chef.
Walking: 6–7 hrs (High-altitude terrain)
This is the hardest but most rewarding day on the high-altitude Moonstone trek difficulty section. The climb to the pass is steady, and you will hike at your own pace. At the top, the peaks open in all directions. You can feel a sense of solitude, wind, and the vastness of the Andes on this remote trekking route. We will pause at an apacheta (stone offering mound) to catch our breath and to offer coca leaves to the Apus. This a simple gesture of gratitude from the ancient Gods who kept travelers safe in times gone by. Our descent leads into a quiet valley dotted with adobe houses, amongst quinoa fields, and grazing llamas. These Andean villages receive far fewer visitors than the Sacred Valley, making the cultural connection experienced , wonderfully genuine and authentic.
Walking: 7–8 hrs ( Highest pass of the trek)
As the sun rises over the Andes, it guides us toward the highlight of the route of this original Archaeological Moonstone trek with Inti Punku. This Sun Gate is positioned so precisely that certain sunrises mark seasonal changes. This is an ancient calendar built in Stone and is an amazing sight on the hilltop looking over the valley. We will sit here for a moment, letting the wind speak to us, and it truly feels like a place the Incas intended people to arrive to slowly and with a spiritual intention in mind. As we descend to Ollantaytambo, we join up with an old Inca road once used by traders and Chaskis (Inca messengers). From the town of Ollantaytambo, we board the train for our connection to Aguas Calientes on the Moonstone trek with Ollantaytambo and Machu Picchu.
Night in Aguas Calientes.
Walking: 5–6 hrs (Descent)
Today everything you’ve seen along the trek, like quarries, canals, Sun Gates, agricultural terraces, and other hidden Inca ruins on the Moonstone Trail, all come together as your guide reveals how these elements formed the blueprint for Machu Picchu. You will walk Machu Picchu´s terraces with a deeper knowledge than most visitors. This is due to having followed the same logic of movement, water, astronomy, and sacred geography that shaped the Inca city all those centuries ago.
After the guided tour of Machu Picchu, we return to Aguas Calientes for lunch, then board the train back to Cusco, to complete this 5-day Moonstone trek Machu Picchu journey.
