This Andean trekking route opens up before you, nice and slowly. In the same way that the Andes like it. One valley opens up into another, and the snow gives way to green pastures. These, in turn, change into cloud forest, and before you realize it, your whole sense of distances has changed. This Salkantay with Humantay Hike leads through tiny villages where life still revolves around weather patterns, animals, and shared workloads. The mornings smell like wood smoke and coffee beans drying in the sun. Families pass along the trail with their mules, exchanging a nod, sometimes a joke. In this part of the Andes, walking is simply how people get around in their world. Humantay Lake appears dramatically and almost unexpectedly. Locals say lakes like this are mirrors, places to pause, to adjust your breath, and continue with a clearer hiking route. The Humantay Lake trekking package is built around steady progress, generous pauses, and nights under the stars in the Andes of Peru.
As the days go by, the surrounding scenery changes dramatically. Snow -tipped mountains and the high-altitude silence give way to birdsong. Glaciers disappear, and the air grows warmer. If you want to make a comparison Salkantay trek and Humantay Lake with other treks in the region, this one is like traveling through a number of different worlds rather than searching for just 1 main highlight. Our multiday trek is a family friendly Salkantay trek and Humantay Lake experience for those who are searching for peace, different geographical regions, shared meals, and a local guide who understands that some things are learned by walking quietly over a few days, to take everything in on the way to the magnificent Machu Picchu.
We depart from Cusco and travel by private bus to the small Andean village of Challacancha. This is the starting point of our Salkantay trek Humantay Lake tour. We will enjoy an energy-providing breakfast prepared by our chef, then we will begin hiking towards the village of Soraypampa. This settlement is surrounded by the towering presence of the Humantay and Salkantay Mountains, which are considered protectors of the region, not merely scenic entities. After lunch with sweeping views of the mountain tops, we will continue toward the transparent turquoise waters of Humantay Lake. This climb is steady, and the moment you reach the lake, silence naturally takes center stage. In the Andean belief system, glaciers are living beings, and this lake is their voice. We will spend some time here simply being present and appreciating the lake. Then we will return to our campsite at Salkantaypampa for dinner and a good night´s rest.
This day is often the highlight for families choosing a family-friendly Salkantay trek and Humantay Lake experience. This is due to its powerful and stunning introduction to the Peruvian Andes.
Today is the most demanding day of the Humantay Lake and Salkantay Trek as we cross the Salkantay Pass. After breakfast, we climb steadily toward the Abra Salkantay, the highest point of this trekking route at 4,650 meters. The air begins to get thinner, and each step becomes a little harder, yet more rewarding.
At the pass, surrounded by ice and stones, we will pause to catch our breath and take in the magnificent scenery around us. We will then descend into the valley below toward Wayracmachay, where a well-earned lunch and our campsite await. The afternoon is yours to rest, or simply sit with the mountains as dinner is prepared by our chef.
The Andean scenery begins to change today. After breakfast, we walk through a section of the trail, rich in biodiversity. Birds call from the trees and local families pass us by with animals and traditional farming tools, as daily life continues as it always has done. This is a gentler day of the trek, as we drop in elevation, and our guide Salkantay trek and Humantay Lake trekking route eventually takes us to Collpapampa. Our team sets up the campsite while lunch is prepared. The afternoon is for rest, conversation, and experiencing the unique rhythm of the valley.
As we descend into the Santa Teresa Valley, the air becomes noticeably warmer, and the trail follows the banks of the river. We will hike toward Lucmabamba, which is surrounded by coffee plants and fruit trees. A gentle reminder that the Andes are so much more than mountains and snow.
In the afternoon, you can visit the Santa Teresa hot springs, where warm water is heated from the earth itself. Later, your guide will take you to see how local coffee is grown, roasted, and brewed in the region. An evening is about sharing stories, with delicious aromas.
Today, we will rise early and climb the Trail toward Llaqtapata. This is an Inca archaeological site hidden in the forest. From here, you can actually see Machu Picchu for the first time… in the distance, and framed by mountains. It’s a moment that feels completely deserved!
We will pause for a rest, then we descend past plantations to the Hydroelectric train station for lunch. The final leg of the hiking section is to walk alongside the train tracks through lush jungle until we reach Aguas Calientes. Tonight, a comfortable bed replaces tents, and the anticipation of visiting Machu Picchu begins to surface.
Bright and early, we will take the bus to the gates of Machu Picchu up the mountain. As the sun comes over the mountains, your guide leads a thoughtful walking tour of the Inca citadel, explaining not only what you see for yourself, but how the Incas understood space, water, and the notion of balance.
There is the optional climb of Huayna Picchu, which offers a final physical challenge and sweeping views over the archaeological site (book this permit in advance!) In the afternoon, we return by busto Aguas Calientes and have some lunch. We will then take the train and private transfer to your Cusco hotel, marking the end of this epic Humantay Lake trekking package to Machu Picchu.
